Xcel plans to handcuff Colorado to more dirty energy
Joining an “energy market” run by coal-heavy utilities in Arkansas will make energy in the state dirtier, less reliable, and more expensive
-
Why It Matters
Colorado has been a leader in home-grown clean energy, and we can do even more by teaming up with other Western states that have made similar investments. That way, the region’s abundant clean energy can flow more affordably and reliably to where it’s needed.
Xcel has other plans. They want to enter into a smaller market run by coal-heavy Eastern utilities. That would make energy in the state dirtier, less reliable, and more expensive.

What’s the Solution?
Other Western states are forming a West-wide market with more clean energy, but Xcel is trying to push through a binding long-term commitment to the Southwest Power Pool, one of the most coal-heavy markets in the country. The Colorado Public Utilities Commission can stop them in their tracks and send Xcel back to the drawing board.
