Healthy Homes
We should be able to breathe in our homes and offices without worrying if the air is safe.

Why It Matters
“Natural” gas is methane – a potent greenhouse gas with a climate warming potential of up to 25x more than carbon dioxide. That methane leaks in large quantities as the gas is delivered into our homes. When burned it also releases nitrous oxides at unsafe levels – long established to exacerbate respiratory conditions like asthma in children, the elderly, and other vulnerable people. Natural gas is an unsafe product and has no place in the home.

What’s the Solution?
The good news is that higher-performing, efficient, and clean appliances exist for every use of gas in buildings. Heat pumps provide both heating and cooling at 300x (or more!) the efficiency of a gas furnace. Induction stoves provide superior, precise, safe, and powerful cooking without health hazards. Electric appliances are right for the planet and right for our families. They’re also right for our wallets! Especially with generous federal incentives from the Inflation Reduction Act, they can save us money over the long-term.

What Can I Do?
Counterspark is calling on governors and state legislatures across the country to act to make our homes cleaner, healthier, and more affordable. Ask your representatives to: 1) Support programs that lower the consumer costs of electric home appliance and energy efficiency upgrades. 2) Reduce spending and end subsidies for soon-to-be obsolete gas infrastructure 3) Build a clean energy workforce of electricians and contractors that can install and maintain advanced building technologies.
