Offshore wind creates jobs & powers millions of homes and businesses!

Passing these bills will create jobs and power homes with clean energy in New York City.

  • Why It Matters

New York is a leader in accelerating the energy transition, having committed to 100% clean energy by 2040. To achieve this target, the state is going to need to accelerate investments in offshore wind. Doing so will create thousands of local new jobs and result in lower costs for New Yorkers.

  • What’s the Solution?

Bills S.6327 and A.7407 will ramp up New York’s offshore wind target to 9.9 Gigawatts of energy by 2035 and slowly increase it to 20 Gigawatts by 2050–enough clean energy to power millions of New York homes and businesses.

The recently awarded Empire Wind 1 and Sunrise Wind offshore wind projects already created over 400 construction jobs in Brooklyn this year alone and will provide about 10% of electricity needs for NYC and Long Island, create over 1,000 good-paying jobs in our backyards, and provide $32 million in investments in our communities.

Enactment of this legislation would extend and accelerate the benefits of offshore wind to millions more New Yorkers, create good-quality jobs right here in Queens and Brooklyn, and revitalize our communities.

  • What Can I Do?

While bills have been introduced in both the state Senate and Assembly, they have a long way to go to become the law, but things could move quickly. Counterspark is reaching out to New Yorkers – focusing on those who live in Queens and Brooklyn – where elected officials have a crucial vote. Join this campaign to tell your state legislators that you support these bills.
