Amidst year of record-breaking climate emergencies, Counterspark invests nearly $600,000 in elections in Arizona and Michigan
Advocacy group wants clean energy champions to win state legislative races
WASHINGTON, DC – National clean energy advocacy group Counterspark announced today it has invested more than half a million dollars in key state legislative races in Arizona and Michigan this election cycle.
“Americans are seeing climate emergencies all around them, including hurricanes, extreme heat, and flooding, and they’re looking for people who will champion clean energy solutions,” said Kim Jemaine, Managing Director of Counterspark. “State legislators have the power to lower household energy costs, improve energy security, and reduce the harmful climate and health effects of fossil fuels by putting us on a path to a 100% clean energy future.”
Counterspark is investing $300K in both direct mail and digital efforts to get out the vote in Arizona, and an additional $280K in general support and direct mail efforts to support several candidates in Michigan.
Michigan narrowly passed a 100% clean energy standard last year and needs a state legislature that will continue to lead on expanding clean energy investments and reducing emissions. In Arizona, the organization’s investment will encourage residents to vote down-ballot in support of candidates who recognize the many benefits of investing in clean energy.
“With record-breaking temperatures in Phoenix both this year and last a sign of increasingly extreme weather and growing energy needs, we believe Arizonans are ready to embrace clean energy leaders,” added Jemaine.
Counterspark mobilizes Americans to support state and federal policies that will accelerate the transition to 100% clean power and electrified transportation. Since launching in 2023, the organization has mobilized over 40,000 supporters from all 50 states to take action in support of clean energy. Electorally, the organization has a track record of success, with six of the seven Virginia candidates the organization invested in, in 2023, winning their races.
