New Jerseyans deserve to know how decisions get made that affect our energy bills!

Our utilities cast secret votes at a little-known org (PJM) with a big impact on the Garden State

  • Why It Matters

PJM is the name of the organization that oversees the electric grid in all of New Jersey, parts or all of 12 other states, and DC. In conjunction with utilities, it is their job to deliver you reliable and affordable electricity. As part of their role managing markets and planning, they have various committees, task forces, and user groups where stakeholders, including our utilities, vote on decisions that impact your electricity price and the resource mix that serves New Jersey.

Since PJM’s business ultimately serves the public and affects everything from the reliability of the grid to the biggest line items on your electric bill, you deserve transparency on how they make decisions.

  • What’s the Solution?

A bill in the state legislature would require utilities to disclose their votes at PJM. This way, lawmakers and the public can have a better look at how decisions get made behind closed doors. Passing this bill is the least that the state can do to give New Jerseyans more insight into how the grid is planned and how power is priced.

A similar bill recently passed in Maryland to make public PJM votes that affect Marylanders, so this is very possible.

  • What Can I Do?

Fill out the form on this page to send a letter to your state legislators to ask them to vote YES on this bill.
