Power lines in Pennsylvania, like in much of the country, are old and outdated, so energy doesn’t flow as efficiently as when they were originally constructed. With demand on the rise and more power coming onto the grid all the time, the problem is multiplied. New transmission lines are needed, but they can be expensive and take a long time to build. Nationally, every year, utility customers spend $20.8 BILLION on the congestion caused by insufficient transmission capacity.
A bipartisan bill passed unanimously in the state House that would require utilities in the state to consider advanced transmission technologies (ATTs) and report on a range of potential benefits associated with their use. ATTs are a set of tools that can optimize our existing transmission infrastructure, allowing power to flow more efficiently without immediately requiring new power lines. If enacted, this bill will save money and upgrade our power lines.
